The mallow plant (Malva Sylvestris) is often referred to as cheese weed due to its seed pod closely resembling the dairy product. It is considered to have powerful healing properties, such as reducing inflammation and soothing the digestive tract.
Traditional medicine practitioners use mallow herbs for their sap. This is believed to be anti-inflammatory, with possible protective properties that treat coughs, colds, sore throats and more.
Those same anti-inflammatory benefits also see mallow used amongst herbalists to soothe the digestive tract. Not only could it help to calm any irritation, but its mucilaginous substances are thought to help promote the healing of the mucosa and intestinal walls. For this same reason, mallow herb is believed to also tackle inflammation caused by rashes, insect bites, burns and skin conditions, when applied directly to the skin in a poultice.
The common mallow plant (botanical name Malva Sylvestris) is sometimes confused with althaea Officinalis – but they are in fact different species that belong to the same plant family and are believed to offer different health benefits.
