Meadowsweet goes by a number of other names – meadow-wort, queen of the meadow, meadsweet and bridewort to name a few. In Chaucer’s The Knight’s Tale it was referred to as meadwort and used in a drink called “save”.
Meadowsweet is often suggested as a tonic for digestive health – believed to soothe stomach acid through its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also thought to be an analgesic, bringing pain relief that can soothe inflammatory conditions like arthritis and gout.
Meadowsweet also contains salicylic acid which could help to ward off harmful infections caused by bacteria like E.Coli and staphylococcus aureus. It is this that gives the herb its antibacterial reputation.
Meadowsweet has a long-held reputation for treating conditions. It’s thought to be useful in treating heartburn, diarrhoea, peptic ulcers, stomach acid and colds. Herbalists believe it to have mild astringent, antacid and antiseptic qualities.
