Borago officinalis
The flowering herb, starflowers, is a great source of antioxidants and fatty acids which may provide health benefits. The leaves and flowers from the plant have been used for many centuries and more recently the focus has been on the oil extracted from the seeds of the borage plant. Anecdotally, it may help clear and brighten skin, balance moods, soothe painful joints and reduce PMS symptoms.
Versatile remedy
The main ingredient found in starflower is the omega 6 fatty acid, Gamma Linolenic Acid, or GLA. Starflower oil is one of the most potent sources of GLA, making up around a third of its content, and is significantly higher than other seed oils.
GLA has anti-inflammatory properties which means it could help with a number of inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and atopic dermatitis.
Whole plant healing
While starflower oil is particularly potent, all parts of the plant have a purpose. In the kitchen, the flowers and leaves can be used to delicately sweeten dishes, with a flavour that has been likened to cucumber and honey. As a herb, it is also sometimes used to treat minor ailments such as coughs, colds and sore throats.
The leaves are useful for supporting adrenal health and soothing the central nervous system. As they are a natural diuretic they also help detox the body.
Female friendly
The seed oil can be pressed into capsules and is often recommended as an alternative to evening primrose oil for women.
