Fennel belongs to the carrot family and is a hardy perennial herb. It originates from the Mediterranean but is now found in many parts of the world. Fennel has a liquorice flavour which is packed with nutrition and is commonly used in cooking or to make tea.
When eaten, fennel is said to become an antioxidant in the body and protect cells from free radical damage. This lowers a person’s risk of chronic conditions, such as cancer, heart disease and obesity. Manganese present in the plant is said to make fennel useful for wound healing, blood sugar regulation and bone development. It’s also commonly used as an appetite suppressant.
