Galium aparine

Clivers – also known under a variety of other names including cleavers – earned its name thanks to the propensity of the plant to ‘cleave’ or attach itself to anything that brushes up against it. This action is one way in which the herb thrives as it can sow its seeds widely. It’s also the reason that many years ago, Clivers was used to bind mattress filling. The tiny hooks on the foliage helps to truss them together tightly.

A herbal hero

Despite it being a common sight in Britain, clivers’ reputation as a medicinal plant is less well known, despite its powerful health-boosting properties. It is classed as a cleansing herb and so is often included in herbal remedies to treat disorders of the kidneys or urinary tract. This cleansing action refers to its diuretic properties, making it useful as a slimming aid, to help manage water retention and for cystitis.

Soothing skin saver

Used externally it can also be used in skincare products. It’s particularly excellent for helping soothe and calm itchy skin conditions like eczema and calming sunburn. It has both astringent and antiseptic properties, so as well as calming inflammation and fighting irritation and infection, it can also detoxify and cleanse the skin.

Clivers’ other uses

In Chinese Medicine, clivers is used to dissolve stagnancy, for inflammation and problems in the urinary tract system. In some areas, the seeds of the plant are dried and then roasted and used as a substitute for coffee. While the plant doesn’t have an odour, the taste can be somewhat bitter.

Although it’s less commonly done so today, in the past, the roots of the cliver plant were used to make a natural dye – when decocted it’s a vivid red colour. One of its other names gives another clue to its alternative use. Sometimes called goosegrass, this is a reference to the fact that it’s a particular favourite of geese. Poultry, horses, cows and sheep will also enjoy eating this herb.
