Eupatorium canabinum

Hemp Agrimony’s healing reputation

The plant hemp agrimony has a long history of being used as a detoxifying herb, particularly for fevers, colds and viral conditions. Despites its name and the reference to cannabis, this plant has no psychotropic properties – hemp merely refers to the shape of the leaves, and it is actually closely related to the daisy family.

Hemp Agrimony and homeopathy

Herbalists recognise the potential in hemp agrimony and so it is used in homeopathic remedies. Its most common use is for flu and associated symptoms like catarrh, fever and a chill. The hemp agrimony is prepared into a homeopathic tincture and then administered frequently in small, well-diluted doses. Alternatively, a tea can be prepared from the dry leaves. A homeopath may also sometimes prescribe hemp agrimony for disorders of the liver, spleen and gall bladder.

Hemp Agrimony and health

The plant is thought to aid the removal of waste products via the kidneys, but it must only be used under careful supervision. There are some concerns over its safety if used incorrectly as it contains hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids – chemicals that may block blood flow and cause liver damage.

The roots of the plant have a gentle, non-irritating laxative effect, and are also useful as a tonic. It can help to support the immune system, increasing the body’s resistance to infections. For many years it has been used in tea form – made from the dried leaves – and given to patients who are just coming down with the flu.

The plant contains several sesquiterpene lactone constituents, which give it an anti-inflammatory action. It is used in traditional medicines across Europe for respiratory tract diseases where it’s included to dampen down inflammation.
