Eyebright (also known as Euphrasia) is a genus from the Orobanchaceae family. You can find this flowering herb growing in fields and pastures across Europe, North America and Asia. It’s a semi-parasitic plant and uses the roots of other nearby plants as water and nutrient sources. Euphrasia is said to have health benefits and can also be used in food to add flavour.
Medicine is made from the parts of the plant that grow above the soil. The name Eyebright comes from its traditional use of aiding inflamed or irritated eyes. Flavonoids like quercetin and luteolin are said to give Eyebright antihistamine properties, making them great for treating hayfever and allergy symptoms. The herb could support heart health and prevent oxidative damage – although further research is needed.
