Historically, mistletoe – specifically the European variant – has been used as a herbal remedy for a range of conditions, including menopause symptoms, seizures, headaches, hypertension, infertility, dermatitis, rheumatism, arthritis and epilepsy. In modern times it has been promoted as a possible cancer treatment – and as a method of reducing the effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Some steep and brew mistletoe leaves into a tea for a calming effect, but we advise you err on the side of caution as consumption could be toxic.
Mistletoe is a semi-parasitic plant that grows on a range of trees including oak, elm, pine and poplar. Over the centuries it has been used as a treatment for a varied range of conditions, including mental health issues; it has been used as a tranquilliser for mental and physical exhaustion.
It’s also claimed mistletoe can treat:
Most reported medical studies on European mistletoe involve application by subcutaneous injection, although other administration methods have been described in experiments – including oral, intramuscular, intrapleural, intraperitoneal, and intratumoral. Mistletoe may be toxic in high doses, potentially resulting in pain and nausea.
Viscum album is the Latin name for European mistletoe (also known as common mistletoe or simply ‘mistletoe’). The plant is native to Europe and western and southern Asia. American mistletoe, meanwhile, is native to Mexico and the United States and is less toxic than its European cousin. There are in fact more than 1,500 species of mistletoe in the world.
