Oak Bark Cut (Quercus robur) has many medicinal and ulcinary uses. It has been promoted as an oral treatment for stomach and intestine disorders thanks to its astringent and draining properties. It has also been claimed that oak bark can help alleviate mouth sores, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids and eczema (the latter two applied topically).
Exceptionally high in tannins, oak bark has long been used for tanning leather, producing as it does rich, dark dye.
Oak bark has been used in some herbal coffee substitutes such as dandelion coffee. This is made by roasting and grinding the roots of certain plants.
Because oak bark – and its roots and wood – are extremely hard, they must be soaked for around 12 hours before consumption can take place. The resulting infusion can then be gently heated, and consumed slowly.
While the ancient Greeks dedicated oak bark to Zeus, their chief deity, and the Baltic states to Thor, the God of Thunder – oak bark is also known as Quercus robur, its Latin name.
