The use of turmeric dates back many thousands of years ago in India where it was used not only as a spice for cooking but also in religious ceremonies. Today it’s still widely used as a spice, in healthcare preparations and even as a natural colouring agent. Its vibrant yellow hue has afforded it the nickname ‘Indian Saffron’.
It is, in fact, turmeric that gives curries their distinctive colour and flavour. The spice is a key ingredient for curry powder – but it’s also used in a range of food items that you may not expect. Manufactured foods such as ice cream, yoghurt, dairy products, popcorn and orange juice can sometimes contain the spice for its colour-enhancing benefits.
For as long as the spice has been around, our ancestors have been using it to treat a wide range of conditions. According to Ayurveda principles, it is thought to strengthen the body’s energy, relieve arthritis and improve digestion. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners use it to treat abdominal pain. It is considered to be a bitter digestive, which can stimulate the production of bile and has carminative properties.
Turmeric’s main active ingredient is curcumin, an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Not only is it responsible for the colour and flavour of the spice, but it’s also the reason that turmeric can fight inflammation so effectively. The active ingredient inhibits the production of inflammation-causing genes, so it’s useful for several health conditions characterised by inflammation, such as arthritis and heart disease.
The golden spice has also been shown to ramp up antioxidant activity and bolster the body’s defences against free radical attack. This can improve health outcomes and also has a positive effect on the skin as free radical damage can cause premature ageing.
