Pokeweed has been used as medicine for centuries by Native Americans and other cultures. It contains anti-inflammatory compounds that could treat conditions such as arthritis and rheumatism. Many herbalists use it as a laxative and diuretic.
The young shoots and leaves are similar to spinach when properly prepared/cooked. Use pokeweed to create a traditional Southern American dish called poke sallet.
Please note pokeweed is toxic in high quantities.
