Bitter orange peel ribbons and quarters have a range of different uses but are chiefly used as a flavouring agent in desserts, sweets, gelatins, puddings and in liqueurs such as Triple Sec, the famed French orange-flavoured liqueur. They are also used as a flavour enhancer for beers and ciders and gins. Bitter orange peel is a key ingredient in marmalade, and an essential for Swedish and Finnish gingerbread and Christmas bread.
The intense flavour of Citrus x aurantium is used in the production of skin care products, body scrubs and soaps, and is used to disguise the taste of pharmaceuticals in medicines.
The Latin name for bitter orange is Citrus aurantium (or Citrus x aurantium), an evergreen tree with long spines, fragrant flowers and orange-coloured fruits whose membranes are sour and bitter. While native to Africa, Arabia and Syria, today it is chiefly cultivated in China, India and the United States.
