Wholesale Grindelia Herb Cut
Grindella robusta
Form: Cut
Product description
Commonly known as Gumweed, Grindelia herb features attractive, bright yellow flowers and is native to North America, Mexico and South America. Belonging to the family Asteraceae, the genus is made up of around 73 species.
Grindelia is a short-lived shrub. Though not uncommon in arid landscapes and overgrazed rangeland in western parts of the United States, they can also be found in the east. In Europe, Grindelia has been categorised as an invasive species.
The flowers are daisy-like in appearance and are in bloom from July through to October. Their stems have several branches that can reach heights of three feet, but are often shorter. Due to their bitter taste, livestock do not tend to consume them.
Studies have shown that each Grindelia species offers a different essential oil composition, potentially as a result of climatic, environmental or genetic variations. Various chemical compounds found in this plant include tannins, saponins, and flavonoids, the latter of which provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
How is it used?
It is believed this herb may have health uses, potentially helping to support the lungs and surrounding tissue. Modern herbalists recommend Grindelia to support lung and respiratory health. Due to its potential expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antispasmodic properties, this herb is used for conditions like cough, bronchitis, and hay fever.
Grindelia was traditionally used by the Shoshoni Native American people to address bronchial problems and skin conditions. It wasn’t until the 19th century that this herb was officially recognised in the US Pharmacopoeia, from 1882 to 1926.
It has also been explored as a potential source of biofuel.
