The lovage plant is a member of the Apiaceae family. Traditionally, the root and rhizome (the plant’s underground stem) have been used to make medicine. Every part of this tall-growing plant is safe to eat and offers a fresh taste as well as the possible health benefits, such as healing of indigestion, heartburn and stomach bloating.
Lovage root is used by homeopaths as ‘irrigation therapy’ for pain and swelling (inflammation) of the lower urinary tract. It’s also thought to prevent kidney stones and increase urine output if fluid retention is present.
In foods and beverages, lovage root is used to add flavour, and in manufacturing it’s used as an aromatic fragrance in soaps and cosmetics.
