The root of the Althaea Officinalis plant has been passed down in herbal folklore as a remedy for skin conditions, respiratory conditions and digestive issues. Its healing powers lay in the mucilage, or sap, the plant contained, which was commonly used in capsule, tincture or tea form.
According to herbalists, marshmallow root may have the power to calm coughs. It is thought to act as an enzyme in herbal concoctions which can loosen mucus and inhibit the growth of bacteria. It is often recommended to be taken as a cough syrup combined with other cough-inhibiting ingredients, or as a tea.
It’s thought that marshmallow root may also have analgesic properties, helping to relieve pain. The herbal ingredient may be a judicious choice when it comes to calming pain-inducing conditions such as a sore throat.
The common mallow plant (botanical name Malva Sylvestris) is sometimes confused with althaea Officinalis but they are in fact different species that belong to the same plant family and offer different health benefits.
