Pareira Brava Root (Chondrodendron tomentosum) is primarily used as a diuretic – i.e., it increases urine flow. It also acts to reduce inflammation and as an antiseptic to the bladder. It’s the official pharmaceutical for the preparation of fluid extract, as recognised in the British Pharmacopeia of 1989. Diuretics assist kidneys by adding salt and water to urine, clearing out extra fluid and reducing blood pressure. Diuretics may also be used when too much fluid is collecting due to heart problems.
Root pieces are roughly cylindrical and between 2cm to 5cm in length, are odourless and have a bitter taste. Externally they are covered in thin dark brown bark, with striations or furrows, while internally they are yellow in colour. The desired drug is drawn from the dried root, as well as the bark and bruised leaves.
The official Latin name is Chondrodendron tomentosum, but is also known as Wild Vine, Velvet Leaf, Cissampelos Pareira. Its common name is Pareira Brava.
