    Annatto Seed Whole

    Bixa orellana

    Form: Whole

    Product description

Annatto seeds, also known as Achiote seeds, come from the achiote plant, which itself is commonly referred to as the ‘lipstick tree.’ The plant is native to the Caribbean, Central and South America, where its seeds are used extensively in the local cuisine. Are you interested in placing a bulk order of annatto seed? To enquire, please contact us using the form below.

    How is it used?

Annatto seed’s distinctive, sweet-yet-peppery taste is used to great effect in Caribbean, Latin American and Filipino cuisine, where it’s traditionally ground down and added as a spice. Meanwhile, its rich, red hue makes it a fine natural food colouring - it’s even used to colour Red Leicester cheese.

Culinary uses aside, annatto seed is believed to have antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Recent laboratory research suggests that it may also have anticancer properties, although these findings are yet to be corroborated by human studies.
