Product description
Cut from the bark of the Myroxylon balsamum tree native to El Salvador, Balsam Peru is an oily sap with a vanilla and cinnamon smell. The botanical is used as a flavouring in food and drink, as a fragrance in perfumes and in herbal remedies due to its claimed antiseptic, antifungal and antiparasitic qualities.
Used in herbal remedies
The liquid is typically utilised by Central and South American people to control bleeding and improve wound healing, as well as to stimulate urine and remove worms. As well as being used as a scabies treatment, Balsam Peru is also used in haemorrhoid herbal remedies and in dentistry to treat "dry socket" when teeth are extracted.
Medicinal products that use Balsam Peru include surgical dressings, cough medicines, wound spray and toothpaste.
Flavouring in food and drink
Due to its sweet vanilla and cinnamon scent, balsam Peru can be used as a flavouring in caffeinated and alcoholic drinks as well as soft drinks and juices. In food, it can be used in baked goods, in tomato products such as tomato sauces and ketchup. It is also used in spices, sauces, pickled vegetables and in sweets and confectionery such as ice cream, pudding and chewing gum.
Helps prevent perfume from evaporating quickly
Balsam Peru is used as a fragrance in perfumes, soaps, and cosmetics. It also prevents fragrances from evaporating too quickly.
