Product description
Cnicus benedictus, also known as blessed thistle, St Benedict’s thistle, holy thistle and spotted thistle, is part of the Asteraceae family of plants. Native to the Mediterranean, blessed thistle is characterised by sharp prickles which adorn its leaves and stem. Blessed thistle is not to be confused with milk thistle. If you would like to place a bulk order of blessed thistle, either in cut or powder form, please enquire today using the form below.
How is it used?
It’s believed that blessed thistle can help treat inflammation, coughs and diarrhoea thanks to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties as well as the presence of tannins, a type of water soluble polyphenol.
Historically, the herb has also been used to treat such ailments as indigestion, infections and even wounds. Because it stimulates the body’s production of bile, it’s also believed to help lower cholesterol levels and prevent the formation of gallstones.
Helping with appetite and digestions
Being utilised for centuries, blessed thistle is thought to help promote the secretion of gastric fluids and saliva, increase appetite and aid digestion.
Herbal remedies
Blessed thistle may treat ailments such as colds, coughs, fever, bacterial infections and diarrhoea. It may also help increase urine output.
Drinks manufacturing
In manufacturing, blessed thistle is used as a flavouring in alcoholic beverages and to make bitter liqueurs. In the past, the plant was used to add bitterness to beer.
