    Blood Root Cut

    Sanguinaria canadensis

    Form: Cut

    Product description

Sanguinaria canadensis, also known as bloodroot, bloodwort, Canada puccoon or red puccoon, has been used in medicine around the world for centuries. Native to the east of the USA and Canada, the plant’s name comes from the red substance that oozes from its rhizome when cut, which resembles blood. We stock bloodroot in cut, powder and whole forms; if you’d like to place a bulk order, please complete the form below to enquire.

    How is it used?

Historically, Native Americans ingested bloodroot to deliberately cause vomiting - a way of cleansing the body. Today, bloodroot continues to be used by those who practice herbal medicine. It’s believed that the plant can benefit dental health by removing plaque and helping to treat gingivitis.

It’s also thought that bloodroot can benefit respiratory health by strengthening the heart, resulting in more oxygen being carried to tissues around the body. Many also use bloodroot to treat common colds and the flu.

Used by Native Americans as a dye

Native Americans used the plant's nutrient-rich juices, as well as the stems and roots, as a natural dye for baskets, clothes, and war paint. Insect repellents and sleep aids were also made from the plant.

    May reduce blood pressure

Bloodroot is thought to help decrease blood pressure by reducing plaque buildup in the arteries, which can lead to issues like arteriosclerosis and heart disease.

The plant may also strengthen heart muscle contractions and promote circulation.

    Potential skin healing properties

Due to its antioxidant and antibacterial properties, bloodroot may help treat acne outbreaks, warts, eczema, skin infections, and other skin issues.
