    Calamus (Acorus calamus) is a flowering plant commonly found in swamps or marshy areas. Native to a variety of Asian countries, including Japan and India, the plant has a number of associated nicknames. These include sweet flag, myrtle flag, beewort, sweet grass and flag root, although there are many more. One of its defining features are its vivid green leaves, though it’s the root (or rhizome) that is most widely used in herbal medicine and cooking.     How is it used?

    The root of the calamus plant has been widely used by herbal medicine practitioners the world over. It’s thought that the chemicals contained within it can relax muscles, thereby addressing swelling. Calamus root has also been used to treat a number of other ailments, including digestive issues and skin conditions.

    Calamus root has a number of culinary uses too; it’s widely used as a spice in Asian cuisine, and can be added to drinks and desserts to give them a distinctive kick. Oil can be extracted from the root too, which is often used to produce hair care products, perfumes and other beauty products.
