Cayenne powder is a blend of different types of peppers, quite often not containing cayenne peppers, and may or may not contain the seeds. Cayenne pepper is finely ground powder that has been prepared from the seeds and pods of various types of chilli. The cayenne variety is commonly called ‘bird chilli’, whilst the botanical name is given as C. baccatum. Cayenne is made from ripened fruit, varying from red to yellow, whilst the powder form is red or red-brown in colour. It is used in cooking spicy dishes, either as a powder or in its whole form. It is also used as a herbal supplement and has a held belief that it will offer healing properties.
