Cinnamonum zeylanicum

Cinnamon bark (Cinnamomum verum) comes from the cinnamon tree which grows in tropical regions. Native to Sri Lanka, you’ll also find this evergreen tree in other parts of the world, including Indonesia, China and Vietnam. In fact, these four countries produce around 98% of the world’s cinnamon. The key varieties include Ceylon, Cassia (Cinnamomum cassia) and Indonesian cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii). During the harvesting season, the cinnamon is peeled from the inner bark of the tree.

How is it used?

Cinnamon bark can be used to create an essential oil which has many applications across the health and beauty industry, including scalp-soothing shampoos. It also makes for a soothing massage oil. Plus, thanks to its high eugenol content, which is believed to be good for dental health, it’s often added to toothpaste. It can also be ground into a powder for culinary and medicinal applications.
