Cochineal is a natural dye used to produce a range of warm orange and red hues. Originally used in Mexico, it was subsequently introduced into Europe. The dye is sourced from the cochineal insect that are harvested from cacti and predominantly sourced from Mexico, South America and the Southwest United States. These tropical insects are oval-shaped and grow to around 0.2 inches long. Today, Peru is the largest commercial supplier.

How to use cochineal?

While this dye has predominantly been replaced with synthetic versions, it is still used as a colouring agent for cosmetics, food and beverages. Traditionally, they have also been used to colour clothes. The specific dyes include cochineal extract, carmine and carminic acid.
