Used medicinally since ancient times, Shepherds Purse Herb has a long and varied history of health boosting potential. It’s versatile and can be used in tea, tincture, capsule or tablet form.
One particularly useful property of shepherds purse herb is its ability to stem bleeding. The plant is believed to help stop altogether, or reduce, both internal and external bleeding. This means it is useful to treat heavy periods, postpartum haemorrhage, nosebleeds, bleeding wounds, varicose veins and haemorrhoids.
The herb contains a number of nutrients including flavonoids, glycosides, amine and vitamins. These have a positive impact on the immune system, the skin and the cardiovascular system helping to promote good health.
In addition, shepherds purse herb is thought to improve appetite and digestion. In the past it has been used to stimulate the production of digestive enzymes, as well as soothe indigestion, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
Although less common, shepherds purse herb is also used in recipes to add some spice to dishes. In particular, it’s used in Asian dishes, where it is used to spice meals or as a filling for dumplings.
Both the leaves and the seeds have a slightly bitter taste that is peppery.
