This curiously named plant also goes by other names: bearberry, bear’s grape, foxberry, crowberry and kinnikinnick. Regardless of what you call uva ursi, the health benefits stay the same. The same evergreen shrub has a history of being used to help treat urinary tract infections as well as skin conditions.
The leaves of the uva ursi plant contain a host of useful chemicals that give the plant its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects. These include ursolic acid, tannins, arbutin and hydroquinones.
When it comes to treating UTIs, uva ursi can help reduce bacteria in the urine, as well as increase urine flow. This helps to flush out the urinary tract and dispel any infection.
As well as being recommended for UTIs, it may also help treat bladder infections, kidney stones and other urinary issues.
When applied topically, uva ursi may also help soothe eczema, reduce swelling and treat minor wounds.
The presence of hydroquinone means it can also be used to lighten dark skin spots, as this substance can help lighten the skin or inhibit melanin production.
