Verbena is just as highly prized for its beauty, as it is for its health-enhancing properties. This tall-stemmed flowering plant’s name is derived from the Latin word ‘verbenae’ which means sacred plants. So sacred was it in fact, that in ancient times it was believed to ward off evil, heal wounds and protect against diseases.
Aside from providing for the bees in your garden, verbena can also be blended into a tea, tincture or extract, as well as into creams or oils that can be applied topically.
For hundreds of years it has been used as a relaxant and nerve tonic, and so today it is still used in natural remedies designed to soothe anxiety. There is also some anecdotal evidence that suggests verbena could help boost immunity, treat anaemia, calm a fever, increase breast milk production and help regulate menstrual cycles.
Verbena is reputed to have anti-inflammatory actions, so it can be used to treat insect bites, and other skin conditions such as eczema. Its calming nature also makes it a useful ingredient for balms, oils and lotions that are produced to help soothe bruising, calm burns, alleviate itchy skin and treat a host of other inflamed skin conditions.
Verbena tea is a popular beverage and can be beneficial when drunk before bedtime, thanks to its calming effect. All of the health benefits of the plant are captured in the tea, which is brewed with fresh or dried leaves. The taste and aroma is reminiscent of lemons, with a creamy and sweet flavour. This bright yellow brew is very refreshing.
