Product description
The exciting sounding wolfberries are also known by a more exotic – but better known name… goji berries. Their popularity soared a decade ago, as people learned how rich these little berries are in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibre.
Berry boost
Wolfberries are harvested from the lycium barbarum plant, which is native to Asia. Traditional Chinese medicine has been using them for centuries, to treat anaemia, improve vision, reduce inflammation and calm coughs. More recently they were declared a superfood thanks to their particular nutritional profile.
Nutritional wonder
The wolfberries’ reputation as being excellent for eyesight is well deserved. These little berries are rich in vitamin A, with 28g of the dried berries providing 150% of the recommended daily allowance. The same amount also provides 23% of the recommended vitamin C levels. Both vitamins A and C are often cited as being vital for eye health.
Tasty treat
The taste of wolfberries can vary according to the variety, but in general they have a sweet and sour flavour. Some are very similar to the taste of tomatoes, while others are more tangy like cranberries. The fresh berries can be quite bitter, but once they are dried they are more palatable.
They can be eaten dried as a snack, sprinkled into smoothies, on porridge, in yoghurt or baked into pastries. A tea or oil can also be made from them.
