Whether protecting the body from free radical damage, reducing pain and swelling or fighting infections and healing wounds, this perennial plant packs a powerful medicinal punch. Wood betony herb is also known as common hedgenettle, bishop’s-wort and purple betony. Some people believe the name betony is taken from the Celtic word bewton – which means good for the head.

Wood betony herb also contains around 15% tannins. This makes it a good astringent to help treat diarrhoea, mouth and throat infections and skin issues.
The healing powers of wood betony herb can also be enhanced with the right herb combination. When blended with skullcap it can help treat nervous headaches, while if used with yarrow it can halt nosebleeds. To help calm congestion, colds and sinus headaches a combination of wood betony and comfrey is advised.

Thanks to antioxidant properties it can fight off free radical damage and help keep disease at bay. Its antimicrobial action can help beat infections and heal wounds. While it is also believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system, treating insomnia, anxiety and nervous disorders thanks to its mild sedative effect.
