Hamamelis virginiana

Witch Hazel is renowned for its astringent properties – but there’s more to this botanical than a refreshing skin toner. It also has health benefits making it a truly versatile ingredient. There are many different species of the witch hazel but one of them is particularly renowned for its health giving properties – hamamelis virginiana. It has an anti-inflammatory and antiviral effect when used both topically and ingested in small amounts.

Witch Hazel and skin care

Witch Hazel is perhaps best known for its use in skin care products. It’s a natural astringent, which can help reduce the size of pores for a clearer, smoother looking complexion, as it encourages the tissues to contract. For this reason, it also makes for an excellent ingredient for acne treatments – by closing the pores it can reduce the rate at which acne-causing bacteria can infect the skin. It makes a great alternative to astringent toners containing high levels of ethanol – which can be too harsh for the skin. It can also help fight puffy eyes for the same reason.

In addition, it also offers users anti-inflammatory benefits. Used topically on the skin, the compounds within witch hazel – like tannins and gallic acid – can help wipe out free radicals that cause our skin to age. Tannins, in particular, can block substances that cause inflammation from entering the skin cells.

It has been used traditionally to soothe sensitive skin and calm redness, there are some studies which have proven its ability to suppress erythema (when the skin reddens in response to irritation or injury).

For the same reason it makes an excellent addition to shampoos as it can calm and soothe an irritated scalp. Its anti-inflammatory benefits mean it may help to minimise conditions like dandruff, psoriasis and eczema – both on the body and the scalp.

Witch Hazel and good health

Less well known is the health-boosting properties contained within the witch hazel plant. Folklore suggests it has a multitude of uses from soothing diarrhoea to treat colds and fevers. Its high levels of anti-inflammatories can help sooth inflammatory illnesses – such as a sore throat.

Its astringent properties can also help with ailments such as varicose veins. As a vasoconstrictor, witch hazel can be applied topically to varicose or spider veins, this will help constrict swollen veins and also has a mild effect on pain.

This plant can also help to slow bleeding so is useful for small cuts and grazes. Combined with its anti-inflammatory action, it can be helpful for haemorrhoids – reducing bleeding and soothing the inflammation.
