Historically, Meadowsweet was often used to decorate churches for weddings and incorporated into bridal bouquets, giving rise to one of its monikers – bridewort. But outside of weddings, the meadowsweet herb holds a number of believed health benefits.
Meadowsweet herb has close links to aspirin due to the salicylic acid. Aspirin is a synthetic version of this pain-killing compound. But, while aspirin can irritate the stomach, meadowsweet is believed to have a cooling effect on the system and is a gentler option.
Meadowsweet is often used by herbalists in conjunction with other medicinal ingredients such as yellow to reduce inflammation. Together, they may tackle mild headaches and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.
It is thought that meadowsweet has an immunomodulatory action. Typically, immunomodulators have the power to balance the immune system, helping it to function as it should. For this reason, the meadowsweet herb could be a useful aid to those who frequently get sick or have a low immune function.
