Orange Flowers Sweet (Citrus sinensis) is the intensely fragrant flower of the Citrus sinensis tree. It is often drunk as an infusion, said to be a mild stimulant. It is often used as a vehicle for the administration of other medicines, and in itself purportedly helps with nervous conditions including chorea, hysteria and epilepsy.
It is frequently used to flavour a range of other herbal concoctions, and the pretty fragrant blossom can be used as an air freshener. It is also integral to the production of orange blossom honey, which is made by locating bee hives near blossoming trees at a particular time of year. This results in a prized orangey honey, which comes with the added benefit that the bees will pollinate the trees. Sweet orange flower infusions are made by steeping the flower in boiling water for several minutes. The water, which should be fresh and not from a previously boiled kettle, should be off the boil before being poured over the flowers, to avoid scalding the blossom.
The common and Latin names are both derived from the Sanskrit nagaranga and the Arabic naranj.
