Product description
Squill Tincture BP 1980 refers to a preparation included in the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) of 1980. The British Pharmacopoeia is an authoritative collection of standards for UK medicinal products and pharmaceutical substances. Squill is derived from the bulb of the plant Urginea maritima, also known as Drimia maritima. Historically, squill tincture has been used as an expectorant in the treatment of chronic bronchitis and other respiratory conditions. It is thought to have an ability to help clear mucus from the airways. Typically, tinctures are prepared using ethanol (alcohol) as a solvent to extract the active components from the plant material.
Squill, part of the Hyacinthaceae family, contains cardiac glycosides and flavonoids.
How is it used?
It is administered orally, usually in small, measured doses due to the potent nature of the active compounds. Given its potency and potential toxicity, Squill Tincture would be used under strict medical supervision. Often used in cough mixtures and historically used to treat dropsy.
