This Christmas, Joseph Flach & Sons is proud to donate to Power for the People’s
Christmas Challenge campaign, raising funds to address chronic food shortages in Agago District, northern Uganda.
Subsistence agriculture is a key source of livelihood for a large number of rural households in Agago. However, the impact of climate change is having a devastating impact on production.
Extreme events such as drought, floods and pest infestation threaten agricultural production and, by extension, food security and incomes.
Local farmers observed that first rains did not appear as planned in April and May, which delayed planting. This was followed by prolonged dry spells, which then affected harvest yields.
Even with their smaller harvests, the farmers then do not have access to the processing equipment or storage needed to add value to their crops, for example by drying and packaging beans or milling and packaging maize. Instead, they sell their produce at rock-bottom prices to processors.
Our support for Power for the People will change this situation. The vision for the Agago Hub is as a centre of excellence for agriculture, revitalising traditional skills in the community and providing a seedbank, processing equipment and storage facilities so that smallholder farmers can increase their income and feed their families.
If you’d like to support this project, you can donate via The Big Give. Donate Now all donations until midday Tuesday 6 December will be doubled, so you can make twice the impact with your gift this Christmas.
