Product description
You’ll know that these bright red berries are used within the food and beverage industry to create condiments and a range of refreshing drinks. But, cranberries are also used in the pharmaceutical industry, thanks to the potent blend of nutrients they serve up.
In fact it’s been nearly 100 years since scientists first noted that consuming lots of the berries led to more acidic urine, prompting speculation that they may help treat Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). And prior to this Native Americans would use the raw berries to help heal wounds.
The Benefits of Cranberries
Food for Thought
The fruity tang of the cranberry makes a wonderful addition to many meats - though of course if really comes into its own when paired with turkey. Food manufacturers have also been known to use cranberries in stuffings, muesli bars, cereals, scones and many more. But, this little berry can also be the star of the show in its own right and dried cranberries make an excellent snack that can be packaged up ready for consumers to consume on the go. It’s rarer for fresh cranberries to be consumed as they have a sour, sharp taste - but when combined with other ingredients or dried they take on a more pleasing flavour.
Berry Power
Not only do cranberries taste delicious but they also have multiple health benefits - a key reason for many manufacturers to incorporate them into their products. Most well known is the beneficial effect they have on the urinary tract system. Cranberries’ unique blend of nutrients can help to prevent bad bacteria from sticking to the lining of the bladder which in turn helps to prevent infections from occurring. Cranberry juice is one of the best known remedies for treating a UTI at home and is well supported by science.
Rich in Antioxidants
Like many brightly coloured fruit and vegetables, cranberries are a great source of antioxidants, in cranberries they mainly derive from proanthocyanidins. The role of these antioxidants is to neutralise free radical damage that can occur as a result of UV light exposure, smoking and pollution. Cranberries are also rich in vitamin C - also an antioxidant – and useful for wound healing, as the Native Americans first discovered. Thanks to a high antioxidant content cranberries may have a role to play in preventing damage to the skin and body and a protective effect on several health problems like heart disease and infections.
As well as the berries being consumed whole, in dried or fresh form, the cranberry is also a popular option for herbal medicines, where it is often used in either powdered or extract form. When processed like this it has the same benefits as the whole fruit.
