Product description
Also known as common dandelion, lions-tooth, blowball, cankerwort, faceclock, lion’s-tooth, and Irish daisy, dandelions are an evergreen perennial herb native to Europe but also found in temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere. They were first introduced to North America in the 1600s by European settlers and spread across the continent as a weed.
Predominantly growing in carpets of grass, dandelions belong to the Aster family (Asteraceae) and are known for their solitary, bright yellow flowers, clock seed heads that disperse in the wind, and rosette of leaves. The distinctive shape of their leaves is thought to resemble a lion’s tooth, and the name ‘dandelion’ derives from the French ‘dent de lion’.
Dandelion contains sesquiterpene lactones, coumarins, triterpenes and polyphenolic caffeoyltartaric acids, as well as a high content of vitamin A.
The dark brown roots collected in autumn offer plenty of applications in pharmaceutical products and botanical flavours for hot drinks.
How is it used?
Dried dandelion root can be sourced in a variety of forms, including tinctures, teas and tablets.
The roots are edible and can be roasted to make a caffeine-free coffee substitute. Being high in vitamins A, B, C, and D, as well as minerals such as iron, calcium and potassium, it makes for a healthy drink that offers the slightly bitter taste of coffee without the stimulant. With naturally sweet and floral notes, drinkers can also skip adding sugar or syrup to their morning hot drink. It can also be applied to tea infusions.
Traditionally used as a diuretic, it’s believed that dandelion root can help improve liver health and blood pressure. It’s also thought to help maintain youthful-looking skin and reduce inflammation. Studies have shown that dandelion root extract could potentially reduce acne and the harmful effects of UV rays from the sun, while increasing hydration and collagen production.
Rich in the prebiotic inulin, it’s also believed that this ingredient can support healthy bacteria in the gut. It’s believed that the anti-inflammatory properties have also been historically used to treat rheumatism.
