    Product description

    Devil’s Claw Root Powder is derived from the root of the Devil’s Claw plant; a species native to southern and eastern Africa. Known for its distinctive hook-like fruit, the plant has a long history of use in traditional African herbal remedies. This perennial herb with creeping stems is from the Pedaliaceae family, laden with lobed grey-green semi succulent leaves, the tubular red flowers develop into woody capsules with long, hooked projections that resemble claws, giving the plant its common name.

    The root is up to 6cm in diameter with a yellowish-brown striated bark. The plant is odourless and has an astringent taste and is also sold in cut form as well as as an oil.

    How is it used?

    Devil’s Claw Root is reported to contain several bioactive compounds, including: harpagosides believed to be the primary anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents. It is reported to also contain procumbide, a further iridoid glycoside with medicinal properties, flavonoids (plant compounds with antioxidant effects) and phenolic acids, compounds with potential anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Devil’s Claw Root Powder has traditionally been used by indigenous people of the Kalahari Desert and Madagascar for treating pain, digestive issues, and fever. Devil’s Claw Root Powder is primarily used for it’s potential anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, making it popular for conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and pain management.
