    Sponge Whole

    Spongia Tosta

    Form: Whole

    Product description

Sponge is harvested from the luffa plant – and these amazing all-natural sponges make great tools to buff the skin to help improve circulation and improve its texture. The young fruit of the luffa plant can be eaten, but if it’s left long enough it will start to develop a spongy, fibrous skeleton. When harvested and left to dry out fully, the dried sponge is a great body brush.

    Household helper

Just as the sponge can be used to slough away at the body, it can also be used as a gentle scrubber around the house – for cleaning and washing up.

    History

The luffa plant – and resulting sponge – has been around since ancient times. The Egyptians cultivated the vegetable to eat, but also used the hardened skeleton to make shoes and sandals. More recently, up until about World War II the material was also used on ships as both insulation and as filters.

    Family connections

Many people think sponges come from the ocean but in fact they are harvested from the vegetable patch. They’re from the same family as pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers and gourds.
