Product description
Of all of the mallow plants, marshmallow is perhaps the most highly prized by herbalists due to its believed healing properties. Nutrient-rich, marshmallow leaves are used as a healing remedy to treat boils, sores, insect bits, swellings and other types of irritation. The leaves are used in herbal remedies and cough medicines, but you can also harness the mild root-like flavour by steeping the leaves in hot water and brewing a soothing tea.
May calm irritated skin
Marshmallow leaves are often used as a cooling compress to calm inflamed or irritated skin. Long ago, the leaves were claimed to be able to cure venomous bites - though today it’s more likely used to tackle a sore throat or sting.
Soothing sap
Marshmallow leaves are often used as an ingredient for cough medicine, as they’re believed to loosen mucus and soothe the throat. The sticky sap acts as an anti-oxidant and is believed to reduce bladder inflammation.
Could enhance fertility
Some people use the marshmallow plant as an aphrodisiac and it has been used in the past for fertility rites. When added to incense, it may enhance fertility.
Don’t confuse with the common mallow plant
The common mallow plant (botanical name Malva Sylvestris) is sometimes confused with althaea Officinalis but they are in fact different species that belong to the same plant family and offer different health benefits.
