Form: Lump
Product description
Gum Arabic is a gum formed from the sap of Acacia trees. Incisions are made in the bark to encourage the production of the viscous exudate, which is tapped and hardens in the air and sunlight to form tear-shaped lumps.
It is edible, but tasteless and odourless. Gum Arabic is known for its film-forming, encapsulation, and suspension properties, functioning as a binder and gelling agent. It forms a gel in the presence of water but is fully water-soluble, creating a clear, viscous solution.
Gum Arabic lump has several uses:
Gum Arabic is widely used in the food industry as an emulsifier, stabiliser, and thickening agent in sauces, dressings, and dry packaged goods. It enhances the dispersion of soups, instant drinks, and dessert mixes while also encapsulating and protecting flavours to extend shelf life. In baking, it is commonly found in icing, fillings, and edible glitter for cakes. Beverages can also benefit from gum Arabic’s emulsifying and stabilising properties, and it acts as a foam stabiliser in carbonated soft drinks and a clarifying agent in alcoholic beverages like wine and beer.
In the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector, gum Arabic is used as a dietary supplement, including high-fibre powders and drinks, and is believed to have prebiotic properties. It’s often used in cough syrups and serves as an excipient coating for tablets and capsules.
