Product description
Commonly known as Jiaogulan, Poor Man’s Ginseng, Miracle Grass, Fairy Herb, Immortal Grass, Herb of Immortality and Sweet Tea Vine, Gynostemma is a Chinese herb that also grows in Korea and Japan. It’s from the family Cucurbitaceae, the same as cucumber.
The herb’s curious ‘miracle’ and ‘immortality’ status partly stems from a Chinese census in the 1970s, which found the largest percentage of centenarians all drank Gynostemma tea on a regular basis. However, in Chinese folklore, this ingredient has been revered for centuries as a life-prolonging herb.
It’s thought that Gynostemma can protect the ends of chromosomes from becoming frayed or tangled and is essential for cell division, and is thought to be a contributing factor in determining our potential lifespan.
Aside from the potentially life-enhancing properties, this herb includes over 100 saponins, which are the same active ingredient found in ginseng. They are believed to lower the risk of cancer and reduce the body’s response to blood glucose. Other notable ingredients include amino acids, which help the body break down food and are potentially responsible for healthier skin, nails and hair.
How is it used?
This herb is believed to help relieve stress and fatigue and is often consumed as a herbal tea. The taste can be likened to green tea, with a slightly sweet and umami quality. Rich in antioxidants, and with a long-standing belief in its ‘immortality’ properties, this makes it an attractive superfood ingredient.
Other potential health uses include improving the body’s response to insulin and weight management. However, evidence for this is contained in lab studies and requires more scientific research to back up the claims.
