    Product description

    Angelica is a genus of about 60 species of tall biennial and perennial herbs from the family Apiaceae, which is more commonly known as the celery, carrot or parsley family, or simply as Umbellifer. Wild Angelica is found in moist fields and hedgerows throughout Europe. Angelica herb is commonly associated with the plant’s roots, which have many uses. The plant takes two years to reach maturity, once it has the root is harvested; the roots may weigh up to 1.3kg and are rich in its signature musk scent.

    The plant has a cylindrical, hollow stalk, reaches 2m tall and has broad serrated leaves. The flowers are small, greenish-white and the fruits are whitish. The root is 5 – 10 cm long and very hard and yields a thick yellowish juice when cut. The roots contain volatile oils, macrocyclic lactones, coumarins, sugars and flavonoids.

    Angelica Root is also sold in cut and powdered form.

    How is it used?

    The roots of the Angelica plant are dried and used predominantly in gin production and other spirits. Angelica roots also find their way into perfumes and herbal medicines too. The stems and leaves of the plant can also be candied into green strips for garnish and decoration.

    Angelica root is thought to be rich in essential oils, vitamins, and minerals that support overall health. Traditionally, angelica root has been utilised for its digestive benefits, thought to help alleviate bloating and indigestion. It has been considered that the proposed anti-inflammatory properties make it a valuable remedy for soothing gastrointestinal discomfort and promoting a healthy digestive tract. Additionally, angelica root is thought to stimulate appetite and improve nutrient absorption.

    Beyond digestive health, angelica root is thought to offer a range of other benefits. It is revered for its ability to potentially support respiratory health, often used to treat colds, coughs, and bronchitis due to its believed expectorant properties. The powder also plays a role in women’s health, traditionally used to ease menstrual cramps and regulate menstrual cycles.
