Product description
Balm herb, commonly known as Lemon Balm, is a perennial herb in the Lamiaceae family. The Fine Cut version refers to finely chopped or shredded leaves of Lemon Balm. It is native to Southern Europe, particularly the Mediterranean region, but it is now cultivated globally due to its pleasant lemon scent and various medicinal properties. Lemon balm grows to a height of 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) and has bright green, ovate leaves with serrated edges. The leaves emit a lemony fragrance when crushed. It produces small, white to pale yellow flowers in the summer, which are attractive to bees, hence the genus name “Melissa,” which means “bee” in Greek. The plant spreads through underground rhizomes, making it easy to grow and propagate. It prefers well-drained soil and partial to full sun.
Balm herb contains volatile oils, flavonoids, polyphenolic compounds and triterpenic acids.
How is it used?
Recent scientific studies have focused on the potential cognitive benefits of lemon balm. Research suggests that it may improve mood and cognitive function, especially in the context of age-related cognitive decline. Some studies have also explored its potential benefits for conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, although more research is needed in this area. Lemon balm has been used for over 2,000 years. Ancient Greeks and Romans valued it for its therapeutic properties. It was a favourite in mediaeval gardens and was cultivated in monastic gardens for its herbal remedy uses.
The fresh leaves are used to add a lemon flavour to salads, soups, sauces, and teas. It can also be used in desserts and to flavour alcoholic beverages like liquors and wines. Due to its calming scent, lemon balm is used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
