Product description
The Chrysanthemum indicum we supply as extract (dried) is a parent plant to the better-known Chrysanthemums used by florists and recognised by gardeners.
The plant gets its name for its bright yellow blooms as the name means gold flower in Greek and it is one of the few plants that is commonly known by its botanical name, though often shortened to mums.
Chrysanthemum indicum medicinal uses
The flowers of the chrysanthemum Indicum plant have many properties that have seen them incorporated into herbal and traditional medicine.
They are said to host antibacterial properties which enable them to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, including E. Coli, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. When used over an extended period, it is thought the flowers have a rejuvenating effect on the body.
They also have a history of being used to treat inflammation of the throat and eyes, calm itching skin and eczema and reduce hypertension as well as colds, fevers, headaches and dizziness.
Culinary Blooms
The flower heads of Chrysanthemum Indicum are often pickled in vinegar, while in China the flowers are used to make a beverage known as Nam Geg Huay. This chilled drink has a sweet, slightly floral flavour and comes with a host of health benefits. It is thought to induce a state of relaxation when consumed and is also believed to ease head congestion and help strengthen the lungs.
Chrysanthemum Indicum flowers can also be blanched in water and then stripped of the petals so they can be used in salads, stir-fries or two garnish dishes. Only the petals should be used, as the base of the flower has a very bitter taste.
