    Peppermint Leaves Cut Fine

    Mentha piperita

    Form: Cut fine

    Product description

Peppermint, a hybrid of watermint and spearmint, brings a refreshing zest to a variety of applications. Originally from Europe and the Middle East, part of the Lamiaceae family., this aromatic herb has made its way around the globe, captivating those who use it with its invigorating scent and potential health benefits.

Peppermint has a long history in herbal therapy that spans thousands of years. Ancient Chinese, Japanese, and Egyptian cultures levered peppermint for its healing properties, incorporating it widely in their traditional practices. Traces of mint dating back to 1200 B.C. have been discovered in ancient Egyptian tombs, making it one of the earliest medicinal plants. British physician Dr Eaton first documented peppermint in the late 17th century, introducing it to central Europe.

Peppermint has a quadrangular stem with 9cm long and 3 cm broad green leaves with a serrated margin. The plant has small lilac flowers at the base of the leaves. Peppermint contains menthol oil, flavonoids, phenolic acids and lactones. It is also sold in cut form.

    Peppermint leaves have several uses:

For animals, especially horses and dogs, peppermint is a favourite herb. Its soothing qualities and enticing aroma make it a fantastic addition to their diets, promoting healthy digestion and enticing even the pickiest eaters. Horses, in particular, enjoy the scent and flavour of mint.

For humans, peppermint leaves can be added to soothing herbal teas. Well known for its effectiveness in soothing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), peppermint has long been used to ease symptoms. Modern studies confirm that peppermint outperforms both fibre and prescribed muscle relaxants in managing IBS symptoms. The high menthol content in peppermint relaxes the intestinal muscles and offers antispasmodic properties. Additionally, menthol is said to activate the TRPM8 channel, providing temporary but effective pain relief by numbing pain-sensing fibres in the gut. Peppermint is also used in colic, cough and cold remedies.

Peppermint is a popular flavouring agent in toothpaste and chewing gum, and its natural pesticide properties make it invaluable in gardening, repelling pests like mosquitoes. Additionally, some distilleries infuse their gin with peppermint, adding a refreshing twist to the beloved spirit.

Peppermint also has culinary uses being used to flavour ice creams, confectionery, sauces, drinks and liqueurs.
