Product description
Rose hips are fruit or seed-filled pods that grow in North America, Europe and China. With common names including rose hep and rose haw, rose hips grow on all roses, and are positioned beneath the petals. This flower often grows in hedgerows near forests. The fruit is typically oval-shaped and resembles the appearance of a berry with a bright red, orange or purple colour. They are harvested from the end of September to early winter.
Rosehips contain lutein, zeaxanthin, lycopene and beta-carotene as well as being rich in vitamin C. They are part of the Rosaceae family. The shells are removed from the fruit and dried. They are sold as cut and cut fine.
How is it used?
The shells are ready-to-use in pot-pourri and offer a delicate, floral aroma. They can also be soaked to create skin tonics, as the presence of retinoids in rose hip oil is believed to offer glowing benefits for the skin. They are also available to use as a natural pink-red dye for clothes made from silk, cotton, linen and wool. In cuisine, the shells offer a pleasant flavour for jelly, jam, syrup, cordial, tea and wine.
Due to the presence of antioxidants and their high vitamin C content, they are often applied to horse food to aid the immune system and help prevent anaemia. They are a convenient time saver as they are easier to mix into an infusion than whole rose hips, but they still provide all the nutritional benefits.
