Form: Cut fine
Product description
Part of the Asteraceae family of plants, chamomile commonly known as German chamomile, has flowers that bloom in midsummer and look like small daisies with elongated white petals and a yellow centre. Found across Europe and West Asia, this plant can be seen in grasslands and on coastal paths from June through August. There are several varieties of chamomile.
Due to their apple-like scent, chamomile flowers are named after the Greek for ‘earth apple’.
It has a bitter and aromatic taste. Chamomile flowers contain volatile oils, flavonoids, spiroethers, coumarins and polysaccharides.
Chamomile is sold in a number of cut sizes: cut, cut fine, fines, powder and 5:1 extract powder.
How is it used?
Chamomile tea is one of the most popular herbal teas and is often drunk for its relaxing, soothing properties. When the dried flowers are brewed, they produce an attractive golden colour.
In cuisine, this flower can be used in much the same way as other edible flowers. It’s particularly suitable for adding a punchy floral flavour and apple scent to gin-based cocktails, beers and vanilla-flavoured desserts. Due to their apple-based aroma, they are also a natural pairing for apple pie, crumble or sorbet.
In cosmetics and skincare, chamomile has been explored for its high antioxidant content, which is believed to help promote youthful looking skin. In fact, applying this flower to the skin is nothing new – the Ancient Greeks and Egyptians used them to soothe red or dry skin.
Today, beauty brands add the flower to a range of skincare products, including moisturisers, shower gels and face cleansers. It’s believed that their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can reduce redness, tighten pores and provide a skin-brightening glow.
Due to their crisp apple scent, they are also used in aromatherapy essential oils, which can be used in home fragrances and diffusers.
Rich in flavonoids, chamomile flowers are packed with antioxidants, which are thought to have positive effects on cholesterol and blood pressure. It’s believed that chamomile may also help to soothe muscle spasms and anxiety. Traditionally, Chamomile has also been used to treat insomnia, gout sciatica, indigestion and diarrhoea.
