    Gentian Root Cut

    Gentiana lutea

    Form: Cut

    Product description

Gentian root is harvested from a pungent plant and the resulting extract is used to make teas, tonics, tinctures, supplements and more. Perhaps the most common use is in the alcoholic bitters extract, where its addition helps to provide the ‘bitters’ element. The dried roots of the plant are most commonly used for medicinal purposes, but the stem and the leaves of the gentian herb can also be used in remedies.

    Gentian Root and brewing

As well as being the chief ingredient in bitters, gentian root can be used to add a characteristic bitter edge to beers and liqueurs. For this, powdered gentian root is commonly used.

It is, in fact, two of its active compounds – gentiopicroside and amarogentin – that bind to the bitter taste receptors in the mouth and provides the sour taste you may recognise.

Gentian Root and traditional Chinese medicine

The gentian herb is used widely in TCM where herbalists use the bitter quality of the plant to support digestive health. It’s commonly given for digestive complaints such as loss of appetite, gas, diarrhea, heartburn and vomiting. The herb helps by stimulating bile, which then helps to increase appetite.

Gentian root also has also been known to have a detoxifying effect on the body – another of its main usages in TCM, where it is known as Long Dan Cao. In Ayurveda practitioners consider it to be a cleansing herb due to its bitter taste which helps to cleanse the liver and stimulate digestive juices.

    Gentian Root and cosmetics

When used as a powder, gentian root can be added to skin care and used as a thickening agent. A tincture from the plant’s roots can also be added to a wide variety of skincare items where its antiseptic properties are valued.
