Product description
Irish moss powder coarse is derived from Irish moss, also known as carrageenan moss or carragheen, a type of red algae or seaweed, part of the Gigartinaceae family. This seaweed is harvested from the rocky Atlantic coasts, particularly in Ireland and North America. Irish moss is a red algae with a fan-like, fronded structure that ranges in colour from greenish-yellow to red or dark purple.
Irish Moss is said to contain vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K along with the minerals calcium, iodine, potassium, magnesium, and sulphur. Irish Sea Moss also contains carrageenan, a type of gelatinous substance which can be used as a thickening agent and Hordenine.
How is it used?
Irish Moss has a reputation for having multiple uses, whether incorporated into the diet or used topically. Irish Moss has historically been used for its prebiotic effect, supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. It is reported that the mucilaginous texture helps soothe the digestive tract, making it useful for treating ulcers, indigestion, and gastritis. Irish Moss has also traditionally been used to treat coughs and respiratory issues as well as irritations of the kidney and bladder. The gel-like quality of Irish moss is used in topical applications to hydrate and soothe the skin, potentially treating conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and minor wounds.
The coarse powder of Irish Moss is versatile and can be easily incorporated into various applications.
- Soaking: Often soaked in water to rehydrate before use in recipes.
- Blending: Can be blended into smoothies or dissolved in hot liquids.
In foods Irish Moss is used as a thickener and stabiliser in milk products and ice creams.
