    Poke Root Cut

    Phytolacacca decandra

    Form: Cut

    Product description

Poke root, also known as pokeweed, poke sallet, pokeberry, dragonberries, pigeonberry weed, and inkberry, is a dynamic and multifaceted herbaceous perennial plant from the family Phytolaccaceae. While often dismissed as an annoying weed, those who look beyond this versatile plant have discovered an adaptable gem used for diverse culinary, decorative, and traditional applications.

Historically, poke root has been a staple in folk and alternative therapy. Native Americans and early settlers used it in poultices and remedies for skin diseases and rheumatism. In the late 19th century, poke root products were even marketed for weight loss.

Poke root is native to North America. The root surface is yellowish to brownish-grey, wrinkled longitudinally and marked with transverse bars of cork. The inner surface is whitish, very hard and has concentric rings. The berries of the plant are purplish-black and about 8mm in diameter. Poke root has a slight taste and the powder is known to make people sneeze.

Poke root contains saponins, lectins, proteins, betalin type alkaloids, flavonoids and polyphenols as well as histamine and gamma-amino butyric acid.

    Poke root has several uses:

Poke root is a traditional Southern Appalachian food. The leaves have a spinach-like flavour, and the stems taste similar to asparagus. Historically, pokeweed shoots were also a popular dish in Pennsylvania, boiled and served with cream sauce or melted butter.

In alternative therapy, poke root is used for its potential to alleviate various ailments, including mumps, arthritis, and skin conditions. It is also sometimes used for inflammation and breast conditions like mastitis, which affects breastfeeding women. According to users, the anti-inflammatory properties of poke root, which contain saponins, can help alleviate these conditions. The roots also contain other beneficial compounds such as oleanolic acid, α-spinasterol and glucoside.
